The Newscast is from the newsroom team and my hosting this past summer. WFUV Newscasts are 3 minutes with no posts, and stories were written entirely in the newsroom with AP audio for national news and in-house efforts or publicly available materials such as internet streams or public official’s websites.
Spot News is a couple of wraps, the first is a city desk bit from local politics, the second covering scientific development .
Once a year WFUV produces a special public interest news series aired as a weeklong special - this series on Addiction and the Brain was aimed to move beyond stories of opioid use that were victim-centric. I investigated the various elements and adjacent factors to get to a deeper understanding of addictions and deaths that were prevalent in the news cycle. Here are 2 of the 5. The series won a couple of great awards.
Feature Reporting from my time at Maine Public: In The World Of My Dreams is an arts profile, Aging on the Islands of Maine is more policy-facing about a housing problem facing the elderly in Maine, and finally Nitrogen Nabbing: a shorter piece built as support to a panel discussion on citizen science for the call-in show, Maine Calling. They describe an aspect of the way I tell stories with an aim of activating through a sense of place and ambient sound. I find stories more compelling with as much climate and ambiance as practicable.
These pieces are examples of recent feature-length editing I’ve done for other producers. Ellen’s Stardust Diner was produced by a first-timer. I supported her through recording, scripting, voicing and editing; I think she did a terrific first piece. Internet Famous is the work of a first-timer as well. Her production support fell to another editor, and I provided the final edit and tightening. Finally, I’mSoMaleek was the effort of a more seasoned hand.
The Beliefs Podcast is a weekly product for Religion News Service covering ideas behind the news of religion. I am lead producer for this show. My host is WNET President Emeritus Bill Baker. For more details head HERE.
